Chapter 1
”Fight for a better life”

It had gone a week since Elena was turned into a vampire. To everyone's surprise she didn't make it so well as everyone had thought. Damon and Stefan had always said that she was strong, now the opposite of the whole thing showed up. She couldn't handle the facts that she had to drink blood to survive, not that Caroline had enough problem already.
She had kissed Klaus! Klaus of all people, well, it had been in Tylers body, but still! She couldn't believe it, not that the worst part was the kissing, the worst part was that she actually had enjoyed the moment. Tyler wouldn't speak with her when he was busy taking care of the new girl Hayley. Caroline hated Hayley, she thought she owned the place all because she knew Tyler!
Klaus on the other hand, was very happy with the facts that she and Tyler actually had broken up. Caroline could tell, when she saw that nasty superior smile on his face. She hated it, she hated him! Or did she? She couldn't tell, she hadn't been herself the last couple of days, after what Alaric had told the council it only were a matter of time before they would capture her and kill her.
She had to get out of town, not that she wanted to leave all of her friends and family behind, but it was for their own safety that she considered it. The council could use them to get to her and she didn't want that. Her family had to remain safe, if not she could never forgive herself.
“Hi Stefan, how is Elena?”Caroline asked as she answered the phone.
“She will be fine, I hope. Damon is with her now”, Stefan said. “She is doing better, Jeremy came over to talk to her and actually got her to drink some blood.”
“Well that's good”, Caroline said.
“Yeah, heard anything about the council?”
“Nope, but I was thinking I would leave town for a while”, she confessed as she stood up from her bed. She had already packed and written a note for her mom. It wasn't the best way to tell Liz, but it was better this way than saying goodbye face-to-face. She didn't want to cry in front of her mom, in that case she might reconsider. “Only until has hushed up...”
“That would probably be the best, Damon and I have considered it too actually. But we can't leave with Elena right now and with Klaus in town no one knows what will happen next.”
“That's true”, she whispered. She had been avoiding all of the originals for the whole week by staying at home with the doors shut, even though she had met Klaus one time at the grill when she had been visiting Matt. He had been strangely silent, but the smile on his lips could tell a lot. “Well I have to finish packing, send Elena my best!”
“I will, take care Caroline.”
“You to.”
She hang up the phone and threw it on the bed. The bags that she had packed was open on the floor in front of her bed, she had said that she had finished packing to Stefan and it was kind of true. She had packed clothes, toothbrush, her laptop and other necessities... But she wasn't ready to go yet and she had no idea why.
She thought about Tyler, the words rang in her ears as she thought about that night when she had told him about the kiss. He didn't understand, why would he? He had found the drawing of her from Klaus at the nightstand, he knew she had gone with him to the Mikaelson ball. If she would have been in that situation she wouldn't believe in him either.
“It's over Caroline”, he had said before he had turned around and left her alone in the woods. The rain had started to fall from the black sky and there were no chance in the world that she would ever get him back, she knew that now.
With her right hand she swept away a single tear that fell down her cheek, she had cried enough for him, it was time to get past what have happened and face what was waiting. As Klaus had said, there was a whole world out there waiting for her and now she finally had the chance to take it. No one needed her right now, she was all alone and no one could stop her from leaving, not now!
Just as she was ready to leave the house the doorbell rang. She let out a heavy sigh and walked through the hall to the front door.
When she opened the door her eyes widened, it was Elijah, Klaus's older brother.
“Elijah?”Caroline said surprised. “What are you doing here?”
She had never really talked to him, she only knew him with the facts that Elena had told her. And with that she knew that Elijah could be trusted.
“Caroline”, Elijah said with his serious voice. “I hope I'm not disturbing you.”
His eyes went to the packed bags behind her as she had moved them on her way to the door.
“Oh, no not at all”, she said with a smile. “I'm just moving some things to the cellar, that's all.”
She had never been good at lying, but she'd had practice when she needed to convince her mom that she wouldn't drink at parties and after a couple of lies she had become good at it.
“So, what to you wanna talk about?” she asked when he didn't say anything.
“It's about Niklaus.”
Of course it was about that asshole, she thought, who else would bother her about him.
“What about him?”she asked as polite as she could although her voice sounded very strange.
“He disappeared last night and we can't find him anywhere”, Elijah told her. “Rebekah is going nuts at the mansion and I wondered if you would know anything about it.”
“I'm sorry, but I've not heard anything about Klaus this whole week”, she said truthfully. “I don't think Damon or Stefan has anything to do with it either, they have their hands full with Elena.”
“Well thank you anyway”, Elijah said with a small smile. “How is Elena?”
“Better, she drinks blood now so she should be okay”, Caroline confirmed. “But I should head inside now, I've to finish cleaning.”
“Sure, thank you for your time, Caroline.”
By that he turned around and walked away from her house, Caroline saw after him until he had disappeared behind the corner before she walked back inside the house. It was weird that Klaus had just gone somewhere without telling his siblings, not that it was Caroline´s problem. She didn't want to have anything to do with Klaus anyway.
At the same moment as she stepped inside the house and shut the door behind her she felt a sting of pain going through her body before she fell forward while darkness surrounded her...

~The~Vampire~Diaries~

A cold breeze was the first thing that made her brain start working again. She had no idea how long she had slept and she didn't care. It had felt that she was swept inside a dark paradise where she had nothing to concern about, it was only her with no one that could tell her that she wasn't good enough.
“Caroline.”
She opened her eyes with a start and the first thing that caught her eyes was the light blue sky with fluffy white clouds flying around. It was beautiful, it reminded her of the time when she had been a little kid.
Her dad had brought her to the sunny Californien for a weekend, she had been four years old and it had been one of the happiest days of her life. She had actually enjoyed her time with her dad, who now was dead. She did miss him, a lot, but she also felt relieved that she didn't had the quilt inside of her when she had turned into a vampire. She could still feel the pain that he had made her the time when he had thought that he could make her into a human again.
“Caroline!”
First when she heard him screaming she got back to reality.
“What?”she answered in a irritated voice. She was strangely angry, she hated when someone woke her up from a good dream.
She turned her face with her eyebrows in an angry position. She gasped for air when she noticed she wasn't inside her house anymore and then she remember what had happened. She had talked to Elijah and then sudden she had passed out when she had gone back inside her house.
The forest around her was still and the trees were higher than she was used to. Had she gone to heaven? Was she dead? No she couldn't be dead, she understood it the second she saw the face that were staring at her.
“What are you staring at?”she said while she sat up from the lying position. Her head spun around because of the sudden move but she got her balance back faster than a human would ever had.
“You”, he answered with a little grin. She rolled her eyes before she stood up, he backed a few steps so he could lean against a tree.
“Where are we anyway?”she asked while looking around. It was a really peaceful place, with birds singing and beautiful colors that filled up the place with happiness.
“Mystic Falls”, Klaus answered. “If you didn't notice.”
“No I didn't”, she said. “This place is more beautiful than the Mystic Falls I have ever been.”
“True sweetheart”, Klaus agreed almost impossible to hear.
She got up from the ground and looked at her clothes. They were a little bit dirty but she would survive, she thought, although she was stuck with the original hybrid with his ego of being invincible.
“I was inside my house”, she sudden remembered.
“Yes sweetheart”, Klaus said calmly.
“What am I doing here and why the hell are you here with me?”
“Well, this will probably come as a shock for you”, he began. Her eyes was shooting lightnings at him, she hated to wait, she wasn't really the most patient person in the town. Not that Klaus really was the most patient man either, at least of all the facts she had. “Well, technically you are at the spot that your house is, or will be...”
“Excuse me?”Caroline said confused before the truth came up in front of her. “So you're saying, that where I stand right now, there will appear a house that happens to be mine?”
“Well, yes”, Klaus said with a nod.
“Exactly what year is it?”Caroline said, with her voice that were beginning to panic. “And why have you brought me here?”
“It's something around the 980's”, he answered. “And to my own defence, I wasn't the one that brought you here.”
“Who was it then?”
She had to get the answers and if the facts that he said was true, that she was in the year of 980 then she would pass out again. It had to be a dream, a bad dream, a really bad dream. There were no other possibility. Discreet when Klaus weren't looking she picked her arm, it did hurt, so it wasn't a dream.
“If I knew I would tell you”, Klaus said truthfully. “But I think I know who it was and I have a couple of ideas how to get us back home.”
“Oh really? It's a little confusing that you haven't figured it out yet sense you're the big hybrid that everyone fears.” She was acting on fear and panic. Who could blame her? She was trapped in a forest together with the man who killed her friends and family with no clue of how she would get back.
“Easy, love”, Klaus said as a warning, his nice voice was gone. “Don't go on to far now, we will figure out a way to get out of here.”
“Right...”Caroline said rolling her eyes. “How did you get here anyway? I mean, why are we here together. How is this even possible? By the way, your family is very worried about you, strangely enough...”
Klaus didn't smile, but his eyes told her that he was intended to do it soon. “I was on my way to your house to offer you to come with me, I saw Elijah and you talking and didn't wanna disturb you two.”
“You didn't wanna get caught”, Caroline said to clear the whole ting up.”And what to you mean with bring me with you, where?”
“Anywhere you want love”, he said with a grin.
“Back to reality, Klaus”, Caroline said. “So you came to my house...”
“Yes, I was about to knock on your door as you had smashed it in my face.”
Caroline couldn't resist to smile, she had actually closed the door as hard as she could not thinking of anything else. She wasn't sorry she had done it though.
“And then I heard a weird noise to the left of me and then I just passed out”, he told her.
“A witch?”she asked and he nodded.
“I think so”, he said. “The question is why you are here.”
“Maybe I was inside the 'circle' that were dragging you into this freaking place.”
“Always so smart, love”, he said with a smile.
“Lay off, Klaus”, Caroline hissed. “We have enough problem already and it's your fault I'm here!”
“My fault? How could this possibly be my fault?”he said with wrinkled eyebrows.
“You happened to be outside my house and dragged me with you.”
“Well that wasn't really on purpose, sweetheart”, he defended himself.
“Whatever”, Caroline said rolling her eyes. “I don't know about you but I'll be going to find something to eat. No I don't mean blood. Maybe here is some kind of civilization somewhere.”
She turned away from him and started to walk, not caring about if he would follow or not. She could make this all by her self, she thought. Although he did follow...

Chapter 2
"Childhood"

"Caroline, darling, there is no use. You won't find what you're searching for", Klaus said. He was walking behind her through the forest and it felt like they had walked for hours without finding anything. Only trees, moss and more trees. No lake, no big animals only a couple of voles that were running under the ground in their tunnels.
"What would you know about that?"she asked angrily. Her patient had been gone for a long time ago, but still she wouldn't give up.
"I grew up here."
Caroline stopped at once he said that, she could feel how the anger filled her. Now he told her that, now after they had walked a long time, then he could tell her that this was the place where he had grew up.
"Oh, so when did you plan to tell me this? When we would've starve to death?"she said turning to face him. The smirk on his face were only there to tease her and she knew it all to well.
"I would have told you earlier", he said. "But you were too busy to listen to me."
Caroline rolled her eyes. "Lead the way then."
Klaus smirk grew bigger as he turned left and started to walk. Caroline hated the facts that she actually had to follow him, him of all people in the world. Why not Elijah? Or even Rebekah! But no, it had to be Klaus.
"How do you know that it's 980's anyway?"she asked after being quiet for a long time. "The forest doesn't change over a night, Klaus."
"I know that, but I happened to know the place that we woke up in. I had inscribe my name on one of the trees when I was a kid."
Caroline blinked, Klaus as a kid, she couldn't imagine him as a little, innocent kid. That just sounded wrong, she had always looked at him as a murderer, never thought about that he actually had been a human.
"Okay, so here's the deal", Klaus said when he finally stopped behind a couple of bushes. "I will go to a village to get some food and some proper clothes because we can't walk dressed like this."
Caroline looked at him with her 'seriously-look?!' while she crossed her arms in front of her chest. No way she would stay in the forest while he got the chance to actually talk to people.
"What if someone recognize you and suddenly there will be two Klaus in town?"she said all serious. "And you have absolutely no right to boss me around only because you grew up here."
Klaus started to chuckle by her statement, which made her even more angry.
"Don't you dare laugh at me in this situation!"
"Okay, okay, just calm down love", Klaus said as he tried to get back to his serious look. "You stay here, I'll be back in a minute."
"Oh no, you're going to kill some one aren't you?"she said with her eyes winded. "Klaus, you can't kill anyone, what if you change something, you can't change the future! And think about what I said with two Klaus, it would be so weird and wrong."
"Yeah well, that two of me thing isn't going to be a problem", he said while leaning against a tree. His patience was running out, she could tell when he started to look around instead of look into her eyes.
"And why is that?"
"Because I'm about seven years old", he answered. She dropped her jaw when he told her that. She didn't know why, but she got a strange intense of wanting to see him. Which at once made her feel guilty, she shouldn't even have reacted when he told her that. But seriously she had always loved kids and Klaus couldn't have killed anyone when he was seven so in fact she shouldn't feel guilty.
While fighting her feelings, Klaus had stepped passed her on his way to the village.
"Hey! We aren't nearly done with our conversation!"she screamed after him.
"I'll be right back, sweetheart", was all he answered before he disappeared. She could feel how the anger filled her from the bottom up, who did he think he was? He couldn't push her around like she were some kind of a doll, only because he was used to it didn't mean that she was. She would show him, although she didn't want to piss him off because then she might not have a chance to get back home and she really wished she were home right now. She really missed her home, for the first time she realized how much everything mattered to her, her friends, her mom, the house, the grill, even the school.
While she thought about home she sat down on a rock waiting for the ego Klaus to come back. She really hated him, for everything she had done to her friends and Tyler. Tyler, that jerk, who abounded her for that bitch Hayley. She didn't miss him though, she was angry with him. She couldn't describe how she felt, she was so lonely. Bonnie had her hands full with her family issues that sudden had come up while Elena had enough problem on her own. Her mom was all busy with getting her job back and other things. Caroline had no one.
"Hi."
Caroline almost jumped out of her pants when she heard someone speak to her. She had been so busy thinking that she hadn't cared about if anyone would find her, she was after all near the village because she could hear how the humans talked.
A boy, not older than four were standing there with his left blouse sleeve in his mouth. She couldn't do anything else than smile friendly at him. He was so cute with the brown ruffled hair and the blue childish eyes.
"Hi little man", she said. The boy carefully took a step forward so it only were a couple of meters between them. "What's your name?"
"Kol."
Caroline´s eyes winded before she could stop her self. Kol, it was Kol Mikaelson, Klaus younger brother. She held her mask as good as she could even though it was hard.
"Where are your parents, Kol?"she asked with smooth voice.
"Paying for some meat", he answered with a big smile. "Why are you sitting at a rock in the bushes?"
"Because I'm waiting for a fri...someone", she said with quickly. Had she just almost called Klaus her friend? She had serious problems, but to her own defense she'd had a lot on her mind so she couldn't be blamed for making a mistake. "Maybe you should go back to your parents, Kol, before they start wondering where you are."
"Okay, it was nice to meet you!"he said with a big smile before running with his short legs. She was just about to start smiling when she saw who came out of the bushes behind her, Klaus was back.
"Oh, there you are", she said as she stood up. "I met your brother, Kol."
"Really?"Klaus said depressed while handed up a couple of clothes. He had already change from jeans, t-shirt and a black jacket to dark pants and a white shirt.
"Whats up with you?"Caroline asked. Klaus ignored her by walking past her without saying a word.
"I know a cave that we can sleep in." Was the only thing he said but Caroline didn't give up that easy, even though she didn't want to care she did. She shouldn't though, he was a murderer, someone who couldn't be trusted. But that was who she was and there were nothing that could stop it. She felt empathy for everything and everyone, even Damon and he was almost worse than Klaus sometimes.
"Klaus, stop it!"Caroline said without moving from her position. "If we're going to work together we have to talk to each other, you're not the only one with problems you know!"
She was angry, he knew it to. She hated it when she was angry, it made her be someone she didn't like. But it did work, Klaus turned around to face her, but he didn't look happy.
"I'm going to fix it", he said. "Come on now before it gets dark."
"Klaus, please. You can't push me around like I'm some kind of puppy, it's not fair. I want to help, you might have been alone all your life without someone to help you but I'm here now and I want to help you to get us home. I don't wanna feel pointless anymore."
Klaus didn't look at her, but she could see that he was fighting with his own thoughts. She had pushed him a bit to far, she hadn't wanted to use that smooth voice as a weapon but I was worth a shot.
"Sure, whatever", Klaus finally said. "But we will deal with it tomorrow, let's go now."
Caroline smiled at her victory, she knew that she were the person who actually made him consider things, although she also knew that she should take it easy for a couple of days that Klaus wouldn't start hating her.
As the good girl she was she immediately walked after him, she wouldn't bother him for the rest of the night although it was hard for her. She hated him, but she was also curious about what he had in mind and about how he had been as a child. She had already met Kol, who happened to appear as a little, adorable kid. It was a pity Kol wasn't that cute when he got older...
"Do you think Kol will remember meeting me? I mean, I just met him when he was four...So do you think that means that he will remember it now?"Caroline brooded. "I mean, if he remembers it now, then he will know where we are and then get us home!"
She didn't even know why she talked to him, she could just be quiet. But she had never been good at being quiet, it was boring. She had always talked to everyone and everything. She couldn't help it, she was a social person. Klaus would have to deal with it.
"Maybe", he said a bit amused as he stopped in front of a big opening at the stonewall. The mountain was huge in front of them, she couldn't remember the mountain from Mystic Falls. "They blasted it off at the 60's to build a road."
"Oh, that's a pity", Caroline said.
"Yes indeed, sweetheart."
Caroline rolled her eyes, she liked the Klaus who were in bad mood more than the one that called her nice nicknames. It wasn't fair! Tyler had never given her anything and they had loved each other, he hadn't even called her love or anything. Klaus, however, did everything a perfect boyfriend would do, calling her beautiful, giving her gifts... But he also was the murderer who had tried to kill her once. No relationship was perfect though, but she couldn't even look at Klaus that way all because of the one he was.
"Well, you surely want some privacy, right love?"Klaus said while starting a fire in the middle of the opening in the wall.
"Yes", Caroline said before she walked inside the cave. It wasn't big, only 16 feet into the mountain and eight feet high. She had never liked caves, they were so dark, small and depressing. Not that it was all to bad when the fire finally started to light up the place. "I think I saw a lake nearby, I'll be right back."
Before Klaus could say anything she had turned around using her vamp-speed and run through the forest. What was she even doing? She wasn't even supposed to talk to Klaus, not after everything that he had done to her. Sadly enough she couldn't stop it, he had gotten under her skin a long time ago. She didn't hate him, or at least not all of him.
When she reached the lake she stopped at once, putting her clothes that Klaus had given her on the ground before she took off her shoes. Smoothly she dipped her toes into the cold water, enjoying the moment alone in the darkness.

~The~Vampire~Diaries~

When she got back to the cave she found Klaus sitting by the fire with a stick in his hands that he were picking the fire with. He slowly raised his head as she entered the cave, the dress that he had given her was really beautiful even though it was such an old century. She liked it, but her stubbornness wasn't given him any sign of it.
"You look beautiful", he finally spoke when she sat down on the other side of the fire. All she could do was rolling her eyes, which she had done a lot lately. For a couple of minutes all they were doing was enjoying the warm waves that the fire made.
Klaus was staring at her, which made her feel uncomfortable, she hated when someone stared. Or it depended on which situation she was in, when she had danced for Miss Mystic Falls she had enjoyed every single eye that had fallen on her. Now it was more of a punishment.
"Stop staring, it's creepy", she hissed. Klaus chuckled but he did turn his eyes away.
"You should get some sleep", he said.
"Yeah, like that would be possible with you around."
"Come on Caroline, give me a chance", he said with begging eyes. It was hilarious how his voice always changed when she was the only one around.
She hadn't forgotten the time when he had been in Tyler´s body, she would never forget. He had saved her though, instead of his sister, but he had also taken advantage of her. He had kissed her, or, she had kissed him. He had been right, he had only been a victim, maybe he had tried to tell her, but she had been to happy about that Tyler wasn't dead that she hadn't listened.
"Give me one good reason I should", was all she answered looking straight into his eyes. They were beautifully blue, she had always fancied them, not that anyone did know about that.
"Because I fancy you", he said easily. "I would never do anything to hurt you, I care about you, Caroline. I've saved you three times already when I could just have let you die instead. Still I saved you."
He was right, she hated it when he was right.
"Why didn't you just let my die then? After all that you have done to everyone I care about, I don't even know what to do, all I do know is that I hate you!"
He opened his mouth to say something after she had screamed at him. She shouldn't have screamed, but it would be easier for both if they hated each other.
Klaus turned his gaze to the fire again while picking it with the stick he was holding on to. She wanted to say that she was sorry, that she didn't mean to say that, she wasn't a mean girl but nothing came out of her mouth. He really looked sad, or not sad, she couldn't decide. His face didn't show any emotions, it was formal without a sign of any thoughts or anything.
"Just go to sleep", he finally spoke after what felt like a century of silence. She didn't argue back, instead she leaned to the cave wall and closed her eyes. She felt how her heart sank in her chest and before she could do anything else she felt how a single tear welled up. She didn't know why, after all that had happened lately it wasn't a surprise, but deep down she knew it wasn't because what had happened lately, it was because of the man in front of her.
