22. Jets of light

James didn't say anything; he just stood there with a peculiar look in his eyes. His gaze dropped to Lily's stomach for a hundredth of a second, before turning away his head. She could see his jaw tightening in the moonlit night.

"Please?" she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

James hesitated, but nodded his head nevertheless and they sat down on the edge of the fountain. It was quiet, except for the rippling of the water. Lily's heart was beating so loud, she was positive James could hear it. If he did though, he was really good at not showing it because his facial expression was as blank as a piece of paper.

"What did you want to talk about?" James said monotonously.

"Well ..." Lily looked down at her belly, mustering courage. "I just wanted to explain I guess ..."

"You mean, explain to me why you chose to screw my best friend while being pregnant with my child? Oh yeah, go ahead, this I want to hear." Swish, strike one.

Lily swallowed hard. "Well, when you ... when you told me that you wanted to marry Kia, and wanted her to have your child ... I mean, you have to understand that hurt--"

"You could've just told me that you were pregnant!" James intervened. Swish, strike two.

Lily stared at James's profile, her heart throbbing painfully in her chest. "After you had told me you wanted someone else to have your baby?" she retorted, realizing she was crying now. "James I loved you, I still do, and after what you said I felt really hurt and cheated on, and all I wanted was for it all to go away, and then there was Sirius and ... you must understand, you broke my heart!"

"For six whole years all I could think of was you, but you wouldn't even give me a chance! Now, how do you think that felt? Don't come here talking about being hurt. I have moved on, that time in the boathouse was just a mistake." Swish, strike three - you're out.

The words were like daggers through Lily's heart and she was having a hard time breathing. Just a mistake ... Lily bit her lip as silent tears flowed down her cheeks.

James faced forward again, his face as blank and expressionless as carved stone. "Was that all?"

Lily blinked, uncomprehending. "What?" she whispered.

"I said, was that all? Can I leave now?" he said callously.

What could she possibly have said? He had made clear he had moved on and that he didn't love her anymore. What more was there to say? "Yes ... that's all", she said in an outbreath, the words barely making it out of her mouth.

Without a word James got up and walked back up to the mansion. She rose to her feet, watching his back as he walked. How could it be possible for one person to break your heart over and over again?

Lily didn't know for how long she just stood there, staring at where he'd disappeared with tears streaming down her face. Everything felt surreal and seemed to be moving in slow motion. This was not how it was supposed to end ...

Then suddenly, someone screamed in the distance. Lily was only vaguely aware of the green, red and purple jets of light that was suddenly darting about in the dark, and the people running. She could hear someone shout her name and in the next second a red jet of light hit her in the chest, sending her flying back and crashing into the fountain, falling to the ground, unconscious. And on her stomach.
