21. New Year's Eve Lily stared at herself in the full body mirror, her green eyes fixated on her reflection. She was having second thoughts on her red dress — it was simple, strapless, and satin with a black ribbon tied right underneath her breasts. It had seemed fine in the store, but now she wasn't so sure anymore. What if it was too short, or too low-cut? Maybe she should just put on a pair of pants and a blouse? Lily gave a sigh and glanced at the alarm clock on her nightstand. It was half past eight - she was being late. The dress would have to do. She grabbed her trench coat off the hanger and ran down the stairs. Her mother was waiting for her in the living room. As Lily walked inside, a smile spread across her face. "You look stunning, sweetheart", she said. A light blush rose to Lily's cheeks and she lowered her gaze. "Thank you", she mumbled and then remembered she was in a hurry. "I have to go, I'll be home by one." Mrs. Evans nodded and Lily gave her one last fleeting smile, before apparating. She felt the familiar feeling of being pressed into a tiny tube, though soon enough, the pressure ceased and Lily opened her eyes. She was standing in front of a huge brick mansion. It seemed the party was already at full blast, because she could hear music coming from inside. Lily pulled her coat closer to her body and started towards the house. The snow wasn't as deep here, but it was just as cold. As she reached the front porch, two Ravenclaw girls stumbled out of the door. "Look Marietta, it's that pregnant chick!" the one to the left said, pointing towards Lily. Lily snorted. "Didn't your mother tell you it's rude to point fingers?" she hissed, pushing past the girls. "Bitch!" the girl called to her back. Lily ignored her and closed the door behind her, looking around. The entrance hall really took her breath away. It was huge, and there were two giant marble staircases leading up to the second floor. She had no idea that the Fenwick's were this rich. 'Probably another one of those old pureblood families', she thought to herself. To the right, Lily could glimpse the kitchen and to her left, what seemed to be the living room. 'Good Feeling' by Flo Rida was playing at max volume and the base was making the floors shake. This was the kind of party people would be talking about for weeks. "Hey! You came!" called a male voice. Lily turned her head and saw Benjy emerging from the sea of people. Frankly, Lily didn't understand where all the people were coming from. He must have invited everyone from the fifth grade and up. There was a half-empty fire whiskey bottle in his hand and he was wobbling as he walked. Benjy was blonde and cute, though very shy. And at the moment, very drunk. "Yeah", Lily said, allowing him to lean on her for support. She grimaced at the smell of alcohol on his breath. "There's something I have been wanting to tell you", he said groggily, stumbling a bit as he spoke. Just then Lily caught sight of a very familiar face. In the outskirts of the dance floor, Sirius Black was dancing closely to a girl wearing a two sizes too small dress. Lily shook her head. Some things never changed. "Lily, I--" "Hold that thought, will you?" she interrupted, zigzagging through the crowd, leaving Benjy to stare after her. "Excuse me", she said loudly as she reached the couple, parting the two. The girl started protesting loudly, but Lily simply ignored her, turning to adress Sirius. "Where's James?" she yellled, trying to make herself heard over the music. "Backyard!" Sirius said loudly, pointing towards the kitchen. Lily didn't bother to thank him; she simply turned around and pushed through the crowd, dodging Benjy as she passed through the entrance hall. Apperantly there was a glass-door in the kitchen, leading to the garden. Lily stood on the threshold for a moment, looking out over the enormous backyard. There were small clicks of people scattered all over the place. Once again she pulled the trench coat closer to herself, and headed out in the cold. "Hey, James, tell us again about that time you turned Snivellus purple!" a girl called out. Lily snapped her head in the direction of the click by the fountain. Yes - the Fenwick's has a fountain in their back garden. She scoured the group of five. Three of them were girls, so that excluded them. The guy with his back turned to Lily was too short to be James, but the one in front of him ... Her heart started beating faster as she stepped closer, not taking her eyes of the tall, broad-shouldered boy. Standing barely a meter away, she was certain. She felt a quick sharp throb in her chest, somewhere between sweetness and pain. His hair was as messy as usual and his glasses shone in the moonlight. "James?" she heard herself say. Immediately, the click became quiet and they all turned to look at her. James didn't seem to have heard her, but looked around at his mates to see what the interruption was. Then his eyes fell on Lily. At first he was uncomprehending, but then realization came across his face. "We'll go ... get something to drink", the other boy, whom Lily realized was Remus, said and then it was just the two of them. Lily's heart was beating hard in her chest. "Can we talk?"
