16. Awkward

"Lily-pumpkin! Oh, Lily-pumpkin, how you've grown!" Mrs Evans called, running towards her youngest daughter and bringing her into her arms.

Lily took a deep breath, waiting for the impact to occur. She could literally feel her heart beat in her throat, making her feel nausea. Three, two, one ...

Mrs Evans slowly pulled away from the embrace. Her smile was gone from her face and her expression was a mixture of shock, confusion and something that resembled fear. Lily could only imagine what was going through her mother's mind. 'There must be another explanation, my little daughter is a responsible young woman, she would never have unprotected intercourse. Let alone have intercourse ...'

"Mum", Lily croaked, her mouth as dry as sandpaper.

Mrs Evans looked up into her daughter's green eyes that so much resembled her husbands, as if looking for answers, begging her to tell her it wasn't what she thought it was. Gradually, the fact dawned on her. She put her hands over her mouth, gasping. Her daughter was pregnant. She opened her mouth to say something, but Lily cut her off.

"Not here", she whispered pleadingly. She didn't want to make a scene. Besides, she already attracted enough eyes. "Please."

Her mother took a deep breath and then nodded her head once. Mr Evans had just reached them with the trolley, starting to pile her things onto it. For once in Lily's life, she was grateful her father wasn't the "hugging-type".

"Let's go home, shall we? Petunia is waiting for us, she's got a surprise for you", Mr Evans said and started to push the trolley towards the wall between platform 9 and 10.

'Boy, would this be a fun family reunion' Lily thought ironically.

If the drive home wasn't awkward enough, what happened next indeed took the price.

The forty minute drive contained of her father going on and on like nothing had happened, asking questions about school and about how she'd been.

Her mother didn't say a word the entire time.

As they eventually pulled up in front of the red brick house with white details Lily noticed there was a unfamiliar car on the driveway. It was a red Vauxhall Chevette and it seemed expensive.

As soon as the engine had came to a stop, Mrs Evans got out of the car and went into the house. Lily's father turned to her with a questioning expression. "What's with her?" he asked.

Lily shrugged, not wanting to meet his gaze, and quickly got out of the car herself. Once inside she saw Petunia sitting in the living room next to a chubby man with a large purple face. He was talking vividly to Petunia about something making his bushy black mustache jig. The man had thick, dark hair and hardly any neck.

Mrs Evans were no where to be found.

Lily went over to the opposite couch and sat down, her hands entwined in her lap. "Hello", she said and a genuine smile broke across her face at the sight of her sister. She was never at home anymore, having moved to London two years ago, so it was really good to see her.

Her hair was longer, Lily noticed, and she looked tired. She was wearing a pear-necklace with matching pearl-earrings and a formal striped blouse. It looked expensive.

The man stopped talking and turned his head to Lily. His small eyes were blue-gray under bushy, black eyebrows. "You must be Lily", he said, formally extending a hand towards her. "My name is Vernon Dursley."
